I had been making music with hardware for a few years and had already recorded an album of jams (released on Soundcloud). However I was not a producer. The previous album was all live takes with very rudimentary post production, if any. Megafauna was made during my first year of college studying music production. The skills I learnt gave me a new level of compositional control. The tracks are still essentially live takes, but I was not strictly limited to what I could play live with my two hands. During the process of becoming familiar with my production software (Logic 9) it slowly became less of a purely corrective tool and more of a creative one. I found that the benefit of live jamming and improvisation was the in-the-moment spontaneity of it, best for creating a vibe and coming up with a core idea. The benefit of in-the-box post production was control. I was able to fully articulate what I with my two hands could only hint at in a live jam.

The duality of live freedom and software control would go on to inform the compositional style of the follow-up EP 'Fidget' and 'Toukan II'.
